I- I- I still can't quite get over the sheer scale of the numbers we saw on July 22, 2026. Alphabet's Q2 earnings report was a complete financial shockwave. They literally raised their full-year capex guidance to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion. Let that sink in. Up to two hundred and five billion dollars in a single year. It-it-it actually drove Google's first-ever negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion. Negative! For Google! But- but- but here is the crazy part, the absolute counter-weight to that massive cash burn. Google Cloud revenue skyrocketed 82% to $24.8 billion. And they are sitting on an eye-popping $514 billion backlog of AI-hungry enterprise commitments. Plus, they're actually generating direct revenue from custom TPU sales now. It's wild.

But then you look at the actual product side, and there's this real tension. In the earnings call, Sundar Pichai basically had to stand up and admit that they are trailing in "agentic coding" after they delayed the Gemini 3.5 Pro launch. I mean, I- I- I use these tools every day for dev work, and honestly, compared to something like Claude Fable, Gemini's current coding features just... they feel a step behind. You can feel the gap. Pichai says they're already training "Gemini 4" to catch up, but it raises a massive question. Is throwing infinite capex at these models actually hitting a wall of diminishing returns? Or does Google's in-house TPU cost advantage mean they can just out-train and out-spend everyone else anyway? I- I lean toward the hardware advantage, but man, the execution delay on 3.5 Pro is a tough pill to swallow when you're burning six billion a quarter.

Tesla’s AI Pivot Spooks Wall Street: Fleeing Cars for Cortex and TERAFAB

And if you think Google's numbers are a wild pivot, look at Tesla. Wall Street is absolutely spooked. Tesla's Q2 2026 capex jumped 142% year on year to $5.79 billion, up from $2.39 billion in the same quarter last year. That surge turned their free cash flow negative to -$1.09 billion for the first time in two years. And the real kicker? Operating margins collapsed to a razor-thin 1.4%. Why? Because Elon Musk is chasing a $25 billion annual AI spending target, pivoting the entire company away from being just a car manufacturer.

They are sinking billions into serious hardware. We are talking about setting up the first production lines for the Optimus humanoid robot in Texas, starting Cybercab production, and expanding their Austin training compute. Get this: the local Austin cluster, Cortex 1, now clocks in at 90 MW, while the new Cortex 2 clocks in at 115 MW. And on top of that, they're partnering with SpaceX to build "TERAFAB," a local chip fabrication plant to manufacture custom AI logic and memory chips. Now, is this total vertical integration absolute genius, or is it a massive, capital-guzzling distraction while their core EV business is suffering from price discounts? I- I- I think if they pull off TERAFAB, the SpaceX synergy changes everything. But if they don't, that 1.4% margin is going to look like a luxury.
